2012 First Question

Here's a quote I see often - in fact I found this one in one of my own kid's graduation cards:   "The greatest achievements were at first and for some time dreams".   So what does that mean and does it matter?

  1. In my opinion, the meaning of the quote lies directly in the quote itself. Before something can be considered GREAT, whether it be a new invention, a mathematical equation or even a common sandwich, it had to be a dream or an idea FIRST. Nothing great is achieved in the “blink of an eye,” there must be planning and preparation as well as failures and setbacks. Therefore, I believe good ideas take time to be transformed into great achievements.

  2. I think it means that you don't just achieve something because you could are good at something. You achieve something because you practiced and worked hard toward a goal or an idea, and that goal or idea was at first just a dream. I think it does matter because you can't just assume that because you think you are good at something, you actually are in reality. You have to prove you can do something to others, because others don't always believe the word. Actions can sometimes speak louder than words.

  3. No matter the scale used to rank the achievements at hand, either on a personal and simplistic basis or a societal and complex one, I believe this to mean exactly what it states: Remarkable accomplishments begin with dreams. The length of the dream holds no significance in any situation, but the dream itself is all that matters. Those sometimes unrealistic ambitions provide oneself with motivation to live and succeed. They are the fuel of life and without this essential component the "greatest achievements" or just the simplest desires would be impractical.

  4. I think this quote means all ideas or goals start out as dreams and we as individual's make them our greatest achievements. With hard work and motivation, one's dreams can turn into reality. This quote is very true in my mind. If one considers something to be a great achievement, they probably have worked to attain it for a along time, making it only something they could dream about. It matters because if we all dream big, our achievements can be even better, thus making the greatest achievements of ones mere imagination become a reality.

  5. I believe this quote means that achievements were once an idea that someone had. I don't really understand the Greatest part because what describes something as Great? Do we give an object Greatness or is the object Great all by itself? I understand the portion about how achievements once started as dreams. Once a person has a dream they just need to find out how to achieve it.

  6. Yes it does matter. In order for something to happen it has to start out as a dream. This is i good example. Look at everyone that has a record. They had to of dreamed big in order to get those.

  7. The quote from my understanding is telling people they had a dream before they achieved their greatest achievement. Most people have a goal in the beginning and work hard to achieve that goal. I believe when people have a dream they will work ten times harder to achieve their goal. Achieving goals make them dream bigger dreams and attempt to achieve higher accomplishments. I think this is very important for everyone. The more motivation people give themselves with out a doubt will make them a stronger and smarter person.

  8. If someone dreams X+Y+Z = XYZ, but only end up with XY, is that okay? Is the reality in the dream/goals or in the action - or is it in both?

  9. I would say that ending up with just a XY combination is certainly more advantageous than absolutely no result at all. We have to settle for imperfection time to time. Sometimes dreams are only dreams. Other times, dreams become reality. A direct link exist, yet dreams and reality are separate in my mind. It may not seem to be that way, but eventually the dust settles and one can realize what really just transpired. To answer the primary question, dreams must be present before a dream merges with reality. This is a very simple thought, but true. Reality is what reality is. Our connections and "hidden meanings" to events in life are sometimes backed with a dream, while others are just random happenings that we share no relation or tie to in our conscious mind. My dream isn't your dream, therefore, my reality has different connections and meaning than your reality/purpose. I believe this thought does matter as it is one of the basics of individuality and connection to a purpose in life.

  10. In my mind, an accomplishment was at one point a dream. This is because a dream, to me, can be as simple as a want or hope. Whether one wants to achieve an A on a test or hopes to become a lawyer some day, if one works hard this can be accomplished. Therefore what once was a dream became an accomplishment.

  11. I think that every accomplishment started with a dream. Every individual labels their experiences as accomplishments so for them it had to start some where. Some dreams may be simple or very complex like Annika pointed out. Dreams are what make people individuals because everyone's are different whether they admit it or not.

  12. This relates strongly to the idea that essence precedes existence. The quote means one must first dream in order for a particular aspiration to occur and to become reality. If broadened, this quote may apply to everything a person does, not only short or long term 'dreams'. Humans think though everything they do to some extent, even very briefly, before taking action. This supports the philosophy presented within the above quote. It matters because it is important for humans to reason. Without reason, the world would be chaotic.

  13. I definitely agree with Carly. Without reason there would be no "drive" to achieve something. The reason in this case would be ones dream. No one can really tamper with your dream and that allows you to peruse and achieve it.

  14. I believe that this quote is mainly trying to get across that to achieve something so great you need to take certain steps. First you need to have a dream to do just that. After considering your dreams could be made into reality you begin to believe it could be made possible. After that you work for that dream as much as you can and finally achieve it and make it into something great. It then becomes one of your greatest achievements only because you worked at it so hard by your own self and you saw it form from just a dream into reality.

  15. I agree with Annika. Every accomplishment starts out as a hope or a dream if you didn't want it, you never would have accomplished it. Like Annkia said if you wanted to get an A on a test you have to want it 1st. Even if you wanted to get all F's you still make that choice and you decide that is what you want.
